The Orange County Parks and Recreation is sponsoring its 2006 Eco Saturdays programs at the Tibet-Butler Preserve and Vera Carter Environmental Center. All programs begin at 10 a.m. and are free to the public. Reservations are requested because programs fill up quickly. To reserve a place, call 407-876-6696. Area residents of all ages are invited to join guides Randy Snyder and Mary Keim at the preserve for a Butterfly Walk on Aug. 19. Participants will hike the preserve trails at a leisurely pace and learn to identify butterflies and their caterpillar host plants along the way. Hikers are encouraged to bring binoculars - close-focusing binoculars (at eight feet or less) are best- and may bring a bag lunch to eat with the guides following the hike.
A program called Whooping Cranes is scheduled Aug. 26 with Marty Folk of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He will be at the preserve to give an informative presentation about the life and perils of the whooping crane, including the preserve's resident sandhill crane. The program is for the entire family.
The preserve is located at 8777 County Road 535 in Orlando.
